Can we do something to change our habits?
Have you heard about the zero-waste movement? Sure, you have!
It is a movement that seeks to re-evaluate the way we consume and dispose of objects, food, hygiene and beauty products.
It is a quest to reduce our impact on nature when we dispose of our "junk".
The main principles of this movement are:
- refuse,
- reduce,
- reuse and
- recycle.
But how did we get here? How did we get to this point?
For many years it all seemed very easy: we go to the supermarket, buy what we want, discard the products after their use and go back to the supermarket again to buy more stuff. It's all so easy! Right?
We were all happy and pleased with the ease of finding anything we wanted, for instance, those toothbrushes we saw being repeatedly advertised on television, or our favourite drinks in colourful bottles, etc.
However, over the decades, we have come to realise that this is not a sustainable way of consuming, at least not with the materials in which most of the products we use every day are produced.
The tons and tons of trash and discarded products only increase, day by day, year by year.
We are more than 7 billion humans on the planet, and we all have been doing this for decades. So where are we going to get to if we don't change our irresponsible way of living?
Nature is no longer "copping". If you stop and think for a second, there is no "throw away". Your trash may come out of your sight, but it doesn't leave this dear planet we call Earth! Your trash is still around here. That toothbrush you bought ten years ago still exists somewhere!
It is not easy to say "no" to many of the facilities and habits that industrialisation and technology have brought us. We have learned to consume this way for many years. So, it may be hard to change...
But see how much we also enjoy contemplating the beauty of nature, how much we enjoy observing the different seasons, and how good it is to enjoy the beach and the sea in summer.
Is it so impossible for us to change our habits?
We are intelligent beings who adapt, who learn and evolve as people. Let's learn together how to take better care of our home. We now have new technologies and new information is released every day.
Since we are the only beings with the gift of contemplation, let us take care of the natural beauties that inspire and complete us. 🌴
