Meatballs is one of the most traditional dishes of our Portuguese cuisine. Try this 100% plant-based recipe made with beans, seitan and vegetables, for a healthier and equally delicious alternative.

Yields 24 | 4 people

  • 250g of seitan
  • 175g of cooked red beans
  • 1/2 red onion
  • 1/2 red pepper
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • Salt, black pepper and sweet pepper to taste

For the sauce

  • 1 small carrot
  • 1/2 red onion
  • 1/2 red pepper
  • 1 cup of tomato pulp
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste.
  1. Start by cutting the onion into thin slices and the pepper into strips. Sauté in olive oil until soft and move to a food processor;
  2. Add the beans and seitan and process everything. Pour the mixture into a large bowl and wrap the flaxseed. Season and let stand for a while;
  3. Then form the balls, line them in a baking tray with parchment paper, and bake for 20-30 minutes at 175ºC;
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the sauce. Chop the onion, cut the pepper into strips and the carrot into thin slices. Sauté everything with olive oil in a saucepan, then add the tomato pulp. Season and let it cook.

Suggestion: serve with spaghetti pasta (I considered 30g per person) and chives.
