Bifana is a traditional Portuguese sandwich that comprises of a bread roll filled with marinated meat cutlets. The secret is in the marinade and how its cooked. However, this recipe calls for no meat as it is 100% vegan and the steaks are made with Seitan, hence "Seitanas".

  • ½ white onion
  • 250g of seitan
  • 1 cup of tomato pulp
  • 100ml of beer
  • 2 teaspoons of soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons of olive oil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt, black pepper and sweet pepper to taste

  1. Finely chop the onion and saute, over a low heat, with the oil. When it is translucent, add the tomato pulp, bay leaf, spices and let it settle (it should lose its acidity);
  2. Then add the soy sauce and beer and let it cook to evaporate the alcohol;
  3. Add a little water and, after boiling, dip the seitan cut into thin slices;
  4. Cover the pot and cook until the seitan tastes and softens slightly;
  5. Rectify the seasonings and serve on bread or white rice.
